1688 vs Alibaba vs Taobao: Where to Source for Marketplaces

1688 vs Alibaba vs Taobao for marketplace sellers: audience, language, MOQ, prices, payment and risks. Where to source for Kaspi, Wildberries, Ozon and Amazon.

7 min readUpdated

1688 vs Alibaba vs Taobao is the first question a marketplace seller faces when deciding to source goods in China directly. All three belong to the Alibaba group but work differently: 1688 is a wholesale market for buyers inside China, Alibaba.com is an international storefront built for export, and Taobao is retail. The choice determines the purchase price, the minimum order, how you pay and which risks you take on. Below: a comparison table, each platform in detail, a note on Pinduoduo and advice for Kaspi, Wildberries, Ozon and Amazon sellers.

The general rule: the closer a platform is to China's domestic market, the lower the price and the more you do yourself — language, payment, domestic shipping, vetting the seller. That work can be handed to a sourcing agent: ChinaGoGlobal buys goods on any of these platforms, receives them at the nearest of its warehouses in China and ships them to Kazakhstan, Russia and the CIS.

1688: the wholesale market for buyers inside China

1688.com is Alibaba Group's wholesale platform for the domestic market. Factories, their sales offices and wholesalers from Guangzhou, Yiwu, Shenzhen and other industrial hubs sell here — this is where most goods later sold on Kaspi, Wildberries and Ozon come from.

What to know

  • Chinese only. Interface, listings and seller chat. A browser translator helps, but details — contents, material, size chart — are easy to misread.
  • Small minimum orders. Many sellers set the 起批量 (minimum order) at 2–10 pieces, with tiered prices: up to 99 pieces, from 100, from 500. Handy for test batches.
  • Payment through Chinese services. Usually Alipay, WeChat Pay or Chinese bank cards; foreign cards work only in places and with limits. See how to pay a supplier in China.
  • The seller may not be a factory. Many 1688 sellers are trading companies reselling factory goods with a markup. Not always bad, but it affects the price and your ability to customize the product.

Who it suits

Marketplace sellers buying standard goods in batches from a few dozen pieces: household items, accessories, clothing, textiles, home goods, unbranded electronics. First time on 1688? See how to order goods on 1688.

Alibaba.com: the international storefront for importers

Alibaba.com is the same group, built for export: English interface, prices in dollars, English-speaking managers, and Trade Assurance — payment protection on the platform's side.

  • Higher prices than 1688. The same item from the same manufacturer usually costs more: the price covers an export markup, an English-speaking manager and promotion on the platform.
  • Larger minimum orders. In many categories the MOQ starts at hundreds of pieces, though sellers often make exceptions for samples. The listed price is a “from” price settled in conversation.
  • Familiar payment and documents. Cards and bank transfers, an invoice and packing list, export shipping on request. For a first import this lowers the barrier to entry.
  • Different risks. Trading companies are common here too, and a Verified Supplier badge does not prove you are dealing with a factory. A classic scam: an offer to pay “directly, without the platform fee” to a third-party account.

Taobao and Pinduoduo: retail, samples and demand testing

Taobao

Taobao is China's largest retail platform: millions of sellers, from individuals to official brand stores on Tmall. For marketplace sourcing its use is limited, but it has a role.

  • No minimum order. Buy a single piece to see the product in person, shoot it for your listing and test demand before ordering wholesale.
  • Retail prices. For resale on Kaspi or Wildberries the margin usually does not work.
  • Counterfeits. Taobao has many brand replicas. Marketplaces prohibit them and block stores for selling them.

One product, three prices

Compare the same item across platforms. Found it on Taobao? Paste the name or photo into the 1688 and Alibaba search: it is often the same manufacturer, with a price gap of tens of percent. On 1688, sellers tagged 工厂 (factory) or 源头 (source) are more likely to be manufacturers — still worth verifying.

Pinduoduo

Pinduoduo (拼多多) is a group-buying platform with prices below Taobao's and, for many small items, below 1688's. The app is Chinese-only and sellers are mostly small. Use it with care: quality varies from batch to batch, packaging is often minimal, and returning goods from abroad is practically impossible. Order a trial batch and check it in China before shipping — quality control with a photo and video report costs less than a batch of defects already in Almaty or Moscow.

Where to source for marketplaces: Kaspi, Wildberries, Ozon, Amazon

Each marketplace has its own requirements for goods, documents and unit economics, so the sourcing platform can differ too.

MarketplaceWhat sellers buyWhere to sourceSpecifics
Kaspi (Kazakhstan)Home goods, electronics, clothing, car and kids' products1688 as the base; Pinduoduo for the cheapest itemsThe price in tenge includes delivery to Almaty or Astana and customs duties; EAEU import documents required
Wildberries, OzonClothing, footwear, accessories, home goods, small electronics1688 as the base; Taobao for samplesLarge volumes and tough price competition: a few yuan per unit decides
AmazonPrivate-label and niche goodsAlibaba for first runs and documents; 1688 through an agent to cut unit costCertification, barcodes and FBA prep required; often OEM and private label
Common seller practice, not platform rules; for a specific product the landed-cost calculation decides.

What sellers in Kazakhstan and the CIS should also consider

  • Count the cost to the shelf. The 1688 price is only the start: add domestic delivery, international shipping, customs duties, certification and the marketplace commission. See what makes up the cost of goods from China.
  • Import documents. Kaspi, Wildberries and Ozon require import documents and, for many categories, EAEU certificates or declarations of conformity. Sellers on 1688 and Taobao do not provide them — that is the importer's or agent's job.
  • Timing. From dispatch at the warehouse in China: air 2–3 days, road 7–10 days, truck 10–14 days, rail 20–30 days, plus the seller's time to prepare the order and get it to the warehouse.

How to compare platforms on one product

  1. Find the product on 1688 and note the price at your quantity, the minimum order and the domestic delivery cost.
  2. Upload the photo to the Alibaba.com search and get quotes from two or three suppliers for the same volume. Check Taobao and Pinduoduo too: a retail price close to the 1688 wholesale price is a red flag for quality or the seller.
  3. Calculate the landed cost for each option, order samples from one or two sellers and check them before the wholesale order.

How to buy on 1688 and Taobao without Alipay or Chinese

Buying on China's domestic platforms yourself comes down to three obstacles: payment, language and an address in China. A sourcing agent — a buying agent, an intermediary — removes all three. Here is how ChinaGoGlobal works:

  1. You send links to products on 1688, Taobao, Pinduoduo or Alibaba with quantities, colors and sizes — on WhatsApp. No product yet? A manager shortlists suppliers for your brief.
  2. The manager checks with the seller on availability, price at your volume and lead times, and if needed whether it is a factory or a trading company — factory verification.
  3. ChinaGoGlobal buys the goods and enters the address of the nearest of its warehouses — Foshan, Guangzhou, Yiwu or Khorgos. No Alipay, WeChat Pay or Chinese needed — that is the buying service.
  4. The goods are checked at the warehouse: counted, matched against the order, photographed and filmed. Orders from different sellers go out as one shipment: warehouse and consolidation.
  5. Shipping to Kazakhstan, Russia or the CIS by air, road, truck, rail or sea, with customs clearance and documents for the marketplace: delivery.

Commission and fees are quoted on request after a manager sees the task. Cargo can be insured for 2% of the goods' value: if insured cargo is damaged, the company pays the full value or reorders the same goods at its own expense. Estimate shipping with the calculator.

The most common beginner mistake

Choosing a platform by the listed price. The lowest price on 1688 or Pinduoduo often means a different material, different contents or a reseller. Compare offers at the same quantity, ask for samples and calculate the landed cost.

FAQ

How is 1688 different from Alibaba and Taobao?

1688 is a wholesale platform for China's domestic market: Chinese only, prices in yuan, small minimum orders and payment through Chinese services. Alibaba.com is the same group's international platform: English, dollars, higher MOQs, but familiar payment methods and export documents. Taobao is retail: no minimum order, but retail prices — good for samples, not for wholesale.

Summary

  • 1688 is the main source of wholesale goods for Kaspi, Wildberries and Ozon: the lowest prices and small batches, but you need Chinese, Alipay and an address in China.
  • Alibaba.com is for a first purchase, OEM runs and Amazon: more expensive, but in English and with documents.
  • Taobao and Pinduoduo are for samples, demand tests and single items; for wholesale, only with a batch inspection.
  • The hard parts — payment, communication, inspection, warehousing and shipping — can be delegated to an agent. Send product links on WhatsApp and a ChinaGoGlobal manager will quote buyout and delivery on request.
